The History of Maple Syrup

Saturday, February 24, 2018
12:00-4:00 p.m.

After a brief discussion of the history of maple syrup, this hands-on program will focus on the process of making this sweet treat. This practical class will provide plenty of instruction for newcomers, and offers a fun first-hand experience.

Program will include:

  • Discussion of Native, colonial, traditional, and modern techniques of creating maple syrup.
  • Display of the historic techniques, showing how people tapped maple trees.
  • Four stations will be set up focusing on each of these historical approaches, and different tools will be displayed ranging from birch bark buckets to pipeline systems of the modern sugar bush.
  • Compare modern and historic methods as we boil down sap in both a cast iron kettle and a stainless steel evaporator.
  • Participants will be able to tap a tree and sample maple products.

The program is open to all; however, due to the nature and length of the program, it is recommended for older teens and adults. Participants are encouraged to dress appropriately, as the program will be held outdoors.

Included with regular admission; free for members.
